Growing up in Gifu prefecture, Chitose Abe followed in her seamstress mother’s footsteps by sewing clothing for dolls. This childhood hobby grew into a successful career as a pattern cutter for notable Japanese designers, finding her working under Rei Kawakubo at Comme des Garçons, and later with Junya Watanabe for his eponymous brand. Looking for a creative outlet, she founded the Sacai brand in 1999 as a place for her own designs. Over the course of 10 years, attention for the brand began to flourish, leading her to create a base in Paris in 2009, followed by the first runway appearance of Sacai clothing in 2011. Since then, the label has become a fashion fixture with ready-to-wear lines available nationwide. Abe’s experience as a pattern cutter shines through in the technicality of the garments, like the patchwork technique of a Sacai skirt, a spliced sweater, or the crisp lines of a Sacai dress that showcases an expert command of menswear tailoring techniques.
