Balenciaga was founded in 1919 in Spain by designer Cristobal Balenciaga before it eventually moved to its current headquarters in Paris. The Parisian couture house thrived in the 1930s, when Balenciaga became the highly influential brand it is today. Clean, voluminous cuts defined early Balenciaga styles before the designer started experimenting with the bold shapes and sculptural silhouettes that graced the runway in later years. Its current artistic director, Demna Gvasalia, was appointed in 2015 and upholds Cristobal Balenciaga’s vision by pushing boundaries while maintaining high standards of design and construction.
